Global Day of Action To Destigmatize Abortions
Abortions are a normal part of our reproductive journeys.
Together, we are building a world where everyone is free to access their fundamental right to abortion care with love, care, and support.
abortions with care
To us, abortion stories are stories of love and care.
We strive to catalyze and facilitate action to transform abortion narratives and create realities, spaces, and practices that dismantle the stigma associated with abortions to build healthier and happier communities that embrace all abortion experiences.
Looking at the impacts of stigma and how to dismantle it, this global day of action campaign aims to mobilize multidisciplinary initiatives and amplify resources for stigma-free abortion justice.
We envision a world where everyone can access and experience abortions with dignity, quality, and care; we are determined to make that happen.
Understanding the stigma
While research confirms that abortions are a common and normal part of reproductive health globally, prevailing stigma prevents abortion from being treated as a standard healthcare procedure in most parts of the world.
Stigma refers to the negative beliefs, disapproving and judgemental labels, and discrimination against abortion care and everyone who accesses abortions or supports other people accessing it. The stigma of abortion manifests at individual, community, institutional, media, and public policy levels.
The stigma associated with abortions is a major contributor to the social, medical, and legal discrimination and devaluation of abortion healthcare worldwide. It is a root cause for many of the barriers to accessing safe, local, and quality abortions, and for the lack of adequate support and isolation people having abortions often face.
ABORTION STIGMA IS THE REASON...
Abortion is often restricted, criminalized and penalized in public policies
People having abortions often experience isolation, lack of safe access and support
Abortion healthcare services, training, and equipment are underfunded & excluded
Abortion seekers and providers are often harassed, attacked, and targeted
Medical schools and healthcare education exclude or minimize abortion care
Misinformation spreads, and open conversations about abortion are silenced
The media often amplify negative narratives around abortion that reinforce the stigma
We see waves of regression in reproductive rights all over the world
... And many other barriers to access safe, quality, and legal abortions
